I Hated Chemistry, but Proton is Super Fly...

Damn...  A duo from Atlanta that is of a lyrical capability that does not generally mark music from the region.  They experiment inside and outside the lines of the music they create and aren't afraid to draw on other genres to get outside of the box.  While this might sound like a description of one of the greatest Hip Hop acts of all time, I'm not talking about Dre and Big Boi of OutKast.  Instead, I'm referring to one of the most refreshing Hip Hop acts that I have come across in a good minute: Proton.

These dudes, named Larry and Kamikazbi are generating some buzz on the underground hip hop blogs, and for good reason.  They recently dropped a mixtape called Red & Purple, Volume 1 which you can pick up for free at their MySpace.  Do yourself a favor and get hipped...  These cats are super fly lyrically and both have great timing and delivery.  According to the fellas themselves, "their sound is primarily based in hip hop music, but is diversified by electronic, rock, and alternative influences; fitting ingredients, considering their sole proclamation is not to bring 'real' hip hop back, but to push it forward."  This quote completely reinforces my theory that there is a desire for an emphasis on hip hop's past and thirst for authenticity in an artist, but at the same time, artists are pushing the genre forward in new ways... experimenting with new elements...

I haven't had a chance to thoroughly listen to Volume 1, but my early favorite is Laptop which is a sex track hidden under a blanket of internet metaphors.  The track is a great example of how these fellas don't take themselves too seriously...  Another dope example of this is the track Magazine Dreamz, which talks about how we all lust after the chicks in the magazines.  They are fly! Listen and watch below...
