Happy Fucking New Year's Eve!!!  So, NYE is usually more trouble than it is worth, but I sort of have this feeling that '09 is gonna be a good one...  I am hitting an ill party and will be so birdie that it might hurt people's feelings, but I wish everyone out there a killer NYE!  Popped in a pic of the MIA - no place like home.... almost...  Got some cool stuff planned for the new year...

FCC's Chief of State: Meet El Prez

12.29.08 // By Breeze // , ,
Sup yall,

I gotta admit, when I hit the Crates & Mics Showcase a while back to see Convinced, I wasn't super hip to the moves that the Fresh Coast Collective (FCC) was making...  I was introduced to a few emcees that night that have really stuck with me - don't fret, yall will meet 'em just as soon as I can find the time to introduce everyone...

One dude who is making some noise is El Prez - homey is super ill in terms of his lyrical prowess and dude exhibits a pretty versatile flow.  This Inglewood product attended Cal State University-Northridge and legend has it sold 2,000 copies of his first solo album, Getting Greedy in the West, out of his f-ing backpack.  And, if that isn't enough to entice you to give a listen, dude was also the first unsigned artist to perform in concert at the University...  His subject matter is similar to other LA-area artists who have been bubbling lately - he tells really authentic tales of LA life from his unique point of view - as a multi-ethnic dude growing up in South Central, homey definitely has an uncommon perspective...

I really dig this track called Uaintuponthis! featuring U-N-I and Danja.  It is included on the album Prez-A-Nomics which has been met by a positive response from the Hip Hop community. Peep the video below...

Uaintuponthis! featuring U-N-I and Danja Video

Also, I think the track It is What it is is super appropriate given the recent popularization of that phrase in the Hip Hop community.  I have never really understood what it means, but I have definitely used "It is what it is" to describe a number of circumstances in my life recently.  The earhustla remix is pretty dope too - both tracks feature DNEZ...

It is What it is (earhustla remix) featuring DNEZ

It is What it is Video

Homey also released a mixtape called The Daily Show that is pretty fly as well - Go cop that for free here.  I really dig the track Close to Me - I think that this dude's super relatable, which will have a lot of headz bobbin'...  The track Pink Panther is pretty funky as well...

Close to Me

Pink Panther feat. Young Cyph and J7

And, finally, El teamed up with Convinced, Chris Focus, Three 1 Zero, and C-San to release a track called FCC Fastbreak - the track is a hook-free, lyrically dense collection of dope verses from these five emcees...  Below is the track as well as some footage of the fellas performing the song at Crates & Mics...

FCC Fastbreak Live

FCC Fastbreak

And, here is a video of homey spittin' a freestyle with Like of Pac Div at the homey Jesse Lee's Rooftop shindig at The Standard Downtown.

I'm sure you'll be hearing more from the FCC in the future (especially here at MyCypher), so get hip yall...  What's the good word?

Video Feature: Double-O of Kidz in the Hall Technology Feature

12.29.08 // By Breeze // , ,
Sup yall,

So, this was just pushed to me by some homies at Major League Entertainment who manage the Kidz in the Hall...  Apparently, graduate students from NYU (Why not USC?  F-ing Haters!) were chosen to select and profile various people who use technology to better their lives.  I know someone that knows someone that knows someone who was chosen by Cisco Systems and decided to feature Double-O and the piece is super fresh...  He is the only Hip Hop representative among those being profiled - This is a contest so grab the embed and repost this in the name of Hip Hop!!!  Below is a description of the competition from DSolo...

Wanted to get this little clip to you. So 5 film students were commissioned by Cisco Systems to find someone who uses technology to help and better their day to day. A young filmaker from NYU picked Double 0 and Kidz. She followed them around on tour and made a commercial on how technology has helped the guys. Cisco is tracking views on the 5 videos. Ours is the only that highlights music, and hip hop specifically...The spot w/ the most views gets a national platform, so your help in giving this prime placement could make a HUGE difference and, in tern, lead to a hip hop group being the video used for Cisco's national campaign. Any and all help to keep in front of your respective viewers/readers/stans is greatly appreciated! Thanks again and happy holidays!!

On Tour with Kidz in the Hall

In this short documentary (click the picture above) we are introduced to hip-hop group Kidz in the Hall and how they use technology while on tour.

Video: dubFrequency's Basement Blockstars at the Echoplex

12.28.08 // By Breeze // , ,
Sup yall,

So, I headed to Echo Park and the Echoplex last night to catch dubFrequency's Basement Blockstars show. Shouts to dF for throwing a killer party with an insane lineup... My flip froze up about halfway through the show so I didn't get any U-N-I or Pac Div footage, but be assured that both groups came with it. I was running around the venue like an idiot looking for a laptop to plug into, but it just wasn't meant to be... The show was f-ing bananas tho...

Below is some of the stuff I did get before the cam went to hell... The homey Chris Young opened up and put on a killer set to a surprisingly significant crowd so early in the night. Dude is so live on stage and his passion really comes thru to make for a great show... Here is Chris ripping through Black & Gold.

And here is Diz Gibran, who had a killer migraine the whole time, running through his smash Truly Yours. Dude has a really mellow vibe that is cool as shit...

And, this is the last thing I got before I lost the cam - Dom Kennedy spit Watermelon Sundae with help from JSkillz to an eager bunch. Dom is one of the coolest cats around and the crowd was definitely feeling dude...

Anyways, again, shouts to Jesse, Ben, and all of the good people at dF for throwing a dope party!

Peace,

The South's Revolutionary: Meet Donnis

12.26.08 // By Breeze // , ,
Sup yall,

So, I have heard homey's name here and there for a while now, but I didn't really give Donnis a honest listen until the homey Nobody Famous mentioned him to me and said I should check him out.  See, Famous is from the ATL, as is Donnis, and he is doing the intro for his upcoming mixtape - keep checking back for the track coming soon...

Donnis.jpg

As usual, Famous was dead on about his dude Donnis - homey is really talented and super fly.  His music is Southern Hip Hop at its core, but elements from multiple sub-genres of Hip Hop, as well as from Pop, Electro, and House, bleed into his music.  The resulting sound is super funky and dope like you've never really heard before - dude describes his sound as "a revolution for the South," and I dig dude's ambition...  Southern Hip Hop could use a bit of a renaissance.

He is featured on a few tracks from the 10.Deep The New Deal Mixtape from DJ Benzi including the banger Jockin' produced by Million $ Mano.  I fucking love this track and Donnis' verse is pretty wild!

But, the Donnis track entitled Party Works off of the same mixtape might be the gem of the tape.  I think this track has the coolest vibe and is guaranteed to get any party poppin' off! There is enough of homey's A-Town swagger to make it definitively Southern, but the beat is versatile enough that this will hit in the clubs super heavy...

This track is called Supersonic and was said to have been produced by Ryan Leslie.  It does sound a bit like RL's sound - I think that the futuristic sounds used in the track fit well and I truly dig the guitar solo on the bridge...  Sidenote:  I am sort of getting a bit tired of emcees claiming to be extraterrestrials - It was cool when Wayne first started calling himself a Martian and CuDi referred to himself as MoonMan, but all of yall can't be from another planet...

Here are a few more randoms that I am diggin right now including L.O.V.E.  Dude is touring worldwide and will be performing at SXSW in March, so he's obviously making moves...  What's the word on Donnis?

L.O.V.E.

Summer School - This joint is off of the Creme De La Creme Mixtape from dubFrequency that has been blowing up for a while...

Vogue - Love the electronica vibe to this track, and dude's flow is killer!

Video: Pac Div, U-N-I, & Many More Wreck the Just Be Cool Holiday Party

12.24.08 // By Breeze // , ,
Sup yall,

LAx Holiday Party.jpg

This show was super dope!  Shouts to the LAx Paperboy$ for throwing a killer party, but I had to come and post some of this right away...  At the end of the show, U-N-I came back up on stage and host Skotch Davis, who was ill, requested 16's...  Then, all hell broke loose and a dope cypher ensued... Enjoy...

Then, if that wasn't enough, Skotch called Pacific Division out of the crowd and up on stage to perform kill their smash Mayor...  Pretty good time...

Great time for the f-ing blip servers to go down...  More to come tomorrow...

Some Killer Stuff from North of the Border: Meet Drake

12.23.08 // By Breeze // ,
Sup yall,

I first heard about this dude while working at the Indie Hip Hop label called Avatar Records a few years ago, but have to admit that I didn't get it right away.  Drake has been straight grinding since then and has positioned himself to be the next big thing 'round here...  Dude just inked a deal with Interscope, and has already put out a sort of greatest hits mixtape called Heartbreak Drake that is bananas.  Keep up with his news at his blogspot, October's Very Own.

heartbreak-drake-the-best-of-drake.jpg

He was also featured on a few tracks on Lil' Wayne and DJ Drama's Dedication 3 mixtape - from the looks of things, Wayne is either really diggin dude's work or Drake's pockets are actually as deep as he claims.  According to Drake, he is "Young Money Affiliated" but not signed to Weezy's imprint.  However, Wayne is set to EP his album...

The thing that I really dig about Toronto's finest emcee is the fact that he isn't limited to that label.  Dude is insanely versatile!  He also has a great voice and sings on tracks.  Drake varies his flows and has bundles and bundles of 'em to employ.  At the same time dude is a pretty dope story-teller (peep Goin In 4 Life below).  Basically, I will not be surprised if dude is the first artist from Canada to really blow up stateside.  He takes risks on the tracks he jumps on and they usually pay off - the track A Little Bit with Swedish artist Lykke Li is a perfect example...

Anyways, give a listen and do some homework...  I guarantee it will be the first time that research turns out to be fun!  Below are some of my favorites from dude, but be assured that there is a ton of other material online, so start clickin'...

Video: Chris Young Recording with Nobody Famous

12.17.08 // By Breeze // , ,
Sup yall,

So, today I swung thru the homey Nobody Famous' crib to catch up with my man and link up with Chris Young.  Chris came by to lay down a verse on a track that Famous produced and rhymes on and also features ATL-based emcee Skinny C and hopefully will include VerBS.  The track is called Dynamics and is super dope!

Chris was also rolling with his boy Vision, who is a dope producer in his own right and works with CY often.  We listened to some tracks from projects that all three of these cats are contributing to and just chopped it up about the state of the game today.  I love rappin' with creative heads like these three who get where this Hip Hop shit is going!  It's so much fun, and so rewarding, to hear the passion that these dudes have for their craft...

The first video is an intro from Famous and Chris laying down his verse.  Dude got it in, and his whole verse was wrapped up in about 10 minutes, which I thought was pretty impressive.

This video is the first listen to the whole track...  Sounds pretty f-ing dope if I do say so myself.

And here is a shout out from Chris and Vision that includes a lil' info about their upcoming projects.

The track Black and Gold that Vision mentions is bananas - I heard it today and the fellas are going into the studio in a few days to finish it.  Ima try to get in there to get some video for yall, but here's a little preview...

Anyways, I finally finished my last project of the semester and am officially back on the grind, so keep checking back.  I still have two entries from Brazil to finish, so I'll let yall know when they're good to go.  Shouts to Reggie, Chris, and Bret for a very entertaining afternoon!

Track: Chris Young - Get Romantic

12.14.08 // By Breeze // ,
Sup yall,

I was cruising MySpace and noticed that San Diego emcee Chris Young had a put up a new track called Get Romantic.  The track was produced by Shwayze's Cisco Adler, which made me even more curious as I dig his folksy hip hop production style.  By the way, Rich Girls is a fresh mixtape, so go pick it up for free...  I really get hyped when these type of collaborations go down - love seeing creative cats mesh their styles...  The track is pretty cool, and this kid just keeps getting better in the studio... Watch out in '09...

Stream the track here...  And grab his recent One Night Stand Mixtape here...

PSA: I'm Alive... Just Buried. Grab some Mixtapes to Stay Hip

12.09.08 // By Breeze // ,
Sup yall,

I just wanted to write a quick post to let everyone know that your boy hasn't moved away to live on a secluded beach with a gorgeous Brazilian chick (although I was close)...  I am back in the good ol' U.S. of A, but am buried beneath a pile of work for my first semester finals for the whole week.

Brazil was insane and it was hard for the kid to get on that plane, but know that I'm back in LA LA Land, I was hit with a heavy dose of reality like Floyd's right hand!  I will post anything that I think is a can't miss, but have to focus on the books to ensure that all this cash isn't being flushed straight down the drain.

But, in the meantime, definitely go grab Colin Munroe's new tape, Colin Munroe is the Unsung Hero...  Shit is super fly and I can't get enough of it!  Also, Charles Hamilton put out a new one called Intervention that is one of the best of his Hamiltonization Process series of mixtapes.  Get hip here...  And finally, CH dropped the last installment, called The Pink Lavalamp just today - I haven't given a good listen yet, but dude seems to be hitting his stride...

Peace yall,

Plus, the internet connection in the hotel is pretty unreliable.  Here is the new mixtape from Colin Munroe called Colin Munroe is the Unsung Hero.  There are some dope features on here, and I love some of the other stuff I have heard from dude, so this is probably dope - haven't had the chance to listen yet.  Download it free here - courtesy of OnSmash...  Snagged this from Zack - good looks homey...

Also, I am trying to export some videos as I type so that I can post at least one from my first day in Brasil, so stay tuned over at our blog for Brazil 2008...

Peace yall,
-Breeze
