New Artist: Young De

01.31.09 // By Slav Kandyba // ,
young de.jpg Back in early '07, I did a "Back to the Lab" in The Source in which Cypress Hill's B-Real spoke on the album he was working on, titled "Smoke N Mirrors." Almost two years later, B and Duck Down Records are set to get this album into your ears on February 24th. I've heard the thing already and instantly told my former editor at The Source - who is homies with Xzibit - that it is classic material. I still think so, but now I have a bit more to add.

Young De (pronounced 'Dee') will be one to watch out for in the coming days. In addition to being all over B's album (B even said in a listening session in Hollywood that De made him step his rapping up), this Philly-bred spitter recently put out "Homeland Security," a mixtape hosted by G-Unit DJ Whoo Kid and co-starring Shady Records' Ca$his. De's followed that up with "Audio Hustlaz Vol. 1," hosted by DJ Skee and featuring B-real. Find links to download both at De's MySpace.

To make this story short and to get to this video, the first from B-Real's album, what I'm trying to say is that Young De is tighter than a hipster's jeans around the crotch.

Video: Nipsey Hussle - Hussle in the House

01.29.09 // By Slav Kandyba // ,
nipsey hussle.jpg
Chew on this: I slept on this guy when a veteran publicist was pushing him a year or so ago. Then I peeped how his collabos with The Game started surfacing on Eskay's and still didn't pay him much attention, despite the songs being decent.

In the past month or two, all that changed. After partying at Mood on Hollywood Boulevard one night, my newfound Nigerian friend Aminah and I headed to Berries, an after-hours diner down the street from the Beverly Center. You can read the details on my personal blog if you so desire, but to make the story short, I ended meeting Nipsey. A few weeks later, I bumped into my high school homie Lavell at Blue Velvet Lounge downtown L.A. - whom I haven't seen in 10 years - and he brings up Nipsey Hussle, saying he watched dude grow up in his hood around Inglewood (81st and Crenshaw, if my memory serves me correctly).

All that aside, Nipsey appears poised to make a real major impact in the music industry, now that he's signed a deal with Epic Records.

Looking like a younger version of Snoop, having nice rhyme skills and street cred will make one a star. Don't believe me? Judge for yourself in this video for "Hussle in the House." It could very well end up being the street single off his Epic debut album "South Central State of Mind."

I just came across this ill vid of TiRon performing Throwin' My Money live at the HHO Lounge that was surely a part of the interview they did with dude... I love this song, and dude's vibe in general - he spits about real-life issues and shit that he is really going through, which is more than we can say for some emcees (like Officer Ricky Ross, cough, cough)....  Shouts to HHO...

FYI, Shawn Chrystopher Wears Glasses... Just Thought You Should Know

01.26.09 // By Breeze //
Sup yall,

Lately, I've been feeling like I need to show some love to some cats that AREN'T from Los Angeles...  I just have been thinking that a lot of the cats that I'm diggin' right now all seem to be from LA, but the problem is that these dudes are putting out the freshest stuff!  Well, I have a few dudes that I have been trying to find the time to really profile, and most of them are from LA....  So, just deal with it - looks like the West is back!

I have been bumping Shawn Chrystopher's IWG: I Wear Glasses Mixtape (grab it here if you haven't), which was sponsored by LRG, pretty heavy for a while and have been meaning to holler about dude for a minute...  I really dug the concept for the tape, which centers on the idea that we are all the same.  Watch the "pilot" episode of IWGtv and peep this interview with C'est La Vie to get hip.  And, listen to this interlude below from the tape to get the lowdown on the concept from Shawn Chrys himself...

The meaning behind IWG as told by the man behind IWG...

With the way that music, especially Indie Hip Hop, is moving, I think that this is a brilliant concept for an album.  Music is being democratized at an alarming rate, the byproducts of which aren't always good, but it's great to see an artist realize how the playing field is being leveled.  And, not only does dude recognize this early on, but he uses it as fuel for his creativity - maybe all the smart kids do wear glasses...

But, after doing a little bit of digging, I read a bio of dude that makes this all makes sense.  Apparently, dude met Tom Sturges, VP of Creative for Universal Music Publishing, way back when he was a youngster and Tom recoginized something special about Shawn.  Under the guidance of Sturges, Shawn started Red Summer Entertainment and has released a few products under his own imprint.  Dude was on a full ride at USC to study Political Science, and is a true jack of all trades - he produces, writes, mixes, and masters all of his own stuff.  I have to say that, after learning a bit about dude's story, I'm not that surprised that he is making loud noise on the Indie Hip Hop scene...  According to his blog, Shawn has rented a house out and turned it into a studio so that he can focus wholeheartedly on his upcoming album, which is entitled A City With No Seasons...

I think that my favorite track from dude is one that he is very fond of as well.  He flipped Sam Sparro's track Black & Gold and came up with this insane song that he calls Not Really Here...  Super dope track!!!

And, here's the video for the lead track off of the IWG Mixtape called Inglewood Hero...  Shawn jumps on the Nas track and absolutely kills it.  The video is dope as well...

Take a listen to the official remix to Chester French's smash She Loves Everybody, which also features dope verses from Shawn...  I love this track and adding homey to the track just completes it...

Here is another of my faves from IWG called (Not Your) N.I.G.G.E.R.  The title should be enough to entice a listen...

And, I included this one for a few reasons: 1. I absolutely love this track from Kanye (Common is crazy for not snatching this up when it was offered), and 2. I love when cats put out a record that is explicitly for the fans and speaks directly to them - that is exactly what Ode To My Fans is  Imeem only offers a 30-second preview, but you can hear the whole thing at Shawn's MySpace.  Again, I'm not surprised that Inglewood's hero is set to blow...

Peace yall,
-Breeze

Track: Drake - Unstoppable (Remix) feat. Lil Wayne & Santogold

01.25.09 // By Breeze //
Sup yall,

This track is making its rounds right now, and is actually dope as hell...  Read somewhere, and it was a great point, that think of how much money Santogold and MIA would be getting if these samples were actually licensed - that would be some loot.  But, it's dope they seem flattered to be so influential on the Hip Hop scene - thanks ladies...  Anyways, Drake jumps on to remix Unstoppable and features Lil Wayne and Santogold...  Stream down bottom and snag it here...  Shouts to Olivier.

Show Video: Dom Kennedy & Skotch Davis Inaugurate Cool

01.24.09 // By Breeze // ,
Sup yall,

Last night, your boy swung over to Santa Monica to hit the Inauguration of COOL party that the LAx Paperboy$ threw at Dakota Lounge.  Dakota was formally the Temple Bar, but new ownership came in, and I must say, they really freshened the place up - the renovations are dope!

INAUGURATION-INVITE_small.jpg

Anyways, the party featured performances by Dom Kennedy and Skotch Davis, both of whom played with a live band.  I dig the live band element and think it will become increasingly popular as the live show continues to grow in importance within Hip Hop...  Here is a video of Dom performing his verse from the smash with Pac Div & Carter called Everyone Knows Us.

Dom also ran through Miss Donna Karan with some help from Polyester the Saint...  I don't think you can see 'em, but Dom was rockin the old school Penny II's - those joints are one of my all time favorites...  Random I know...

Here's a clip of Skotch hyper-spittin' with his drummer.  I'm not sure what the name of the track is, or if it's a song or freestyle for that matter, but dude got it in!

And, finally, dude performed his track Summers in New York, which I think is an absolute hit...  This song closed the show and was a fitting way to end a very cool show...

Shouts to Fred and Gavin from LAx for throwing another dope party - Just be cool yall...

He's No Nas ...

01.23.09 // By Slav Kandyba // , ,
But Ali Vegas' rhymes impact me just as hard as Nasir's, and its no coincidence. With the financial backing from his childhood Southside Jamaica Queens homie and current Laker forward Lamar Odom (who owns Rich Soil Entertainment, an indie label where Ali is the only artist, to my knowledge), Ali's music has the right mix of substance, street grit and poetry over classic, Primo-sounding beats to get a fan here.

Take it or leave it, but remember this: I'm picky about what I listen to personally - find me bumpin' SWV, Jodeci or Pac and Biggie in the ride on any given day. With that said, Ali's music gets in the rotation no prob.

If you semi-care, listen to the "Transition to Power" mixtape, which Nasir's former A&R Mike Brinkley emailed to me personally, and hear a prolific poet narrate cautionary tales. Or, on "Generation Gap 2: The Prequel," an iTunes-only release, find more commercial radio-friendly joints. I scooped the latter up with an Apple gift card given to me over the winter holidays. (As a point of reference: the other albums I bought with that card were Rihanna and Akon).

What I like most about Ali, whom I had a chance to interview in person before and who's very personable, is that his rhymes are both fluid and full of substance that contains street wisdom. That wisdom, to my ears, is what separates Ali from the sea of "make art for art's sake" rappers that are flooding your favorite blogs, websites and magazines.

Now see this Vimeo clip directed by Rik Cordero and feel free to make up your mind.

So, I haven't heard a ton from Kayo since first posting about him, but I was cruising MySpace today and noticed that dude had posted a bulletin about a new mixtape he just released called The Kayo/Mayer Experience.

KayoMayerFront.jpg   KayoMayerBack.jpg

Most of the tracks sample heavily from John Mayer's most recent album with Kayo spitting over top - Given this dude's vibe, I think this is a brilliant concept for a mixtape!  The tape is dope!!!  Give a listen below or grab it here...  And, keep checking up on your boy to get all the fresh music you can handle!!!

Show Video: Chris Young at Les Deux

01.22.09 // By Breeze // ,
Sup yall,

Last night, your boy headed up the street a few miles over to Les Deux in Hollywood.  I always have a great time partying at this spot, but my motivation last night wasn't to chase skirts - the homey Chris Young performed at the club last night... And, as is always the case, dude had the place hoppin'.  Bummer was that I could only get about half of CY's set because they turned the lights way down during Ms. Mulatto...

This first video was to start the night off - Chris took audience suggestions and started his set with a lil' freestyle to honor our new Chief of State, Barack Obama...

Here is a video of Chris running through a fresh joint called Heart...

And here, Chris performs a track that I just love - the only problem is that I can't remember what it's called... What's even dumber, is that I asked Chris what the song's title was right after he got off stage and still can't remember it...  Dope take on a love song tho...

And, finally, here is the last joint I could get before they dropped the lights about halfway through.  Ms. Mulatto was also featured on the dubFrequency Creme de la Creme Mixtape a while back that absolutely blew up...  Get hip yall...

Shouts to the homies Chris, Vision, and the entire crew for another dope night!

Be Clear, '09 is His Year: Meet Chris Focus

01.16.09 // By Breeze // ,
Sup y'all,

I have referenced the homey Chris Focus a few times before, and am just finally finding time to give the dude some well-deserved love... I first saw/heard dude at the Crates & Mics showcase back in November, and he got me.

Chris_Focus.jpg

Dude is from the Leimert Park district of Los Angeles, and is a member of the Fresh Coast Collective that is made up of a group of talented LA-area emcees, including Convinced and El Prez. Chris is only 23 years old, and has only relatively recently begun to release a gang of material online, mostly through eazeest, but I really dig this dudes energy and charisma. He is dope off the top, and is actually really fly as in the studio as well, as far as I can tell... I especially love his track California Soul, which is the first thing I ever heard from him...

A la the big homey Convinced, Focus will be dropping new material via eazeest every Friday as part of what he calls Focus'd Fridays... Last week, he dropped off the track Success, that I really dig as well... I'm sure that more fire is on the way today, so I'll keep yall updated...

And, here is a track called We Did It that dude recorded to coincide with Obama's victory in the 2008 Presidential Election.  Yes We Can and Yes We Did!!!

Chris also ripped through a verse with the rest of the FCC crew on their track FCC Fastbreak, which you can hear and see live footage of here as well as below..

Also, peep this video of dude freestyling with J.Cole and Shawn Chrystopher to get a better idea of dude's chops.

And, finally, here are 2 short videos of Focus vibin in the studio with Mibbs of Pac Div - dope stuff!

So, keep your ears peeled and your eyes to the ground for much more from Chris Focus on MyCypher in the future... Dude is supposed to be readying a street album tentatively titled What's Left so stay hip y'all....

Video: Katy Perry - I Kissed a Girl featuring Khak Black

01.14.09 // By Breeze // , ,
Sup yall,

I saw the homey Khak Black perform in Hollywood last week at a nightclub that I do a lil promotion work for, and dug his music as well as being pleasantly surprised at his stage presence.  I had heard about this through the wire, but didn't put two and two together until homey mentioned in an email that he had done a remix to the Katy Perry track I Kissed a Girl that popped up on Perez Hilton's blog...  I had meant to post this last week but have been crazy sick, so I dropped the ball.  And, Khak mentioned that Capitol is trying to pull the video off the web, so who knows how long it will be around...

This is a very saavy and creative move from an emcee that I would expect to hear more from in the future.  Plus, the two chicks making out in the video are hella nice to look at as well...  Enjoy...

Show Video: Chris Young Blows up UCSB!!!

01.12.09 // By Breeze // , ,
Sup yall,

So, it was sort of spur of the moment, but your boy Breeze made the trek up the Cali coast on Saturday night to link up with the homies Chris Young and Vision at UCSB.  Chris performed at Sigma Nu's (I think that was the frat...) annual Nu Year Party that apparently "always goes off!" - shouts to the homey J-Rose for the loveliness!

So, needless to say, this was off the hook!  Chris had the whole party really rocking hard for a good 8-10 song set...  The only bummer was that the lighting was shit, as I'm sure is the case for most fraternity basements...  But, peep the video below of Chris running through the smash California Soul, which was produced by Vision...  You can only see bits and pieces, but the audio should let you know how live it really was...

And, here is a brief interview with Chris right after he got off stage.  I love working with Chris and Vision because their hustle is for real - These cats are super hungry and definitely get it...

Here is a couple of vids of Chris spitting off the top later on in the night...  These dudes really live this Hip Hop stuff, and Chris was spitting the whole night.  Every time he would start to go in, cats would be fighting to beat-box for him and a nice lil crowd would form - dope, dope stuff...

Subject matter courtesy of Vision...

Peep the chick in the beginning...

Anyways, be assured that there is much more to come with Chris and Vision in the future - Stay hip to MyCypher for what the future has in store from these dudes...

Track: Chris Focus - Success

01.12.09 // By Breeze // , ,
Sup yall,

Chris Focus and the FCC are up to big things...  Just snagged this from mr. la - his description is pretty dope, so why try to do it better...

So it's 2009 and as you've been seeing...the FCC and it's affiliates have been going hard. In typical FCC type fashion (see Convinced's 2 for 1 Tuesdays) Chris Focus enters the fray with his own special day. Today begins the start of "Focus'd Fridays" presented by Chris Focus and Eazee Street. Chris Focus plans on dropping some kind of treat off every friday...you have to stay tuned to see what he has in store. Everyone looks to start the New Year with a toast to success...so Chris Focus would like to propose a toast to success as well. Here's his track Success...a melodic track with a hypnotic and head bobbing effect. It's good song to vibe with no matter where you are. Stay tuned for more and add his myspace page here.
"...my shirt and my shoes correspond like faxes..." - Chris Focus

Above is a video of homey performing the track live at Crates & Mics a few weeks back...  Stream the track below or snag it here... Enjoy...

Show Video: Kenan Bell Live at Cranes Tavern

01.06.09 // By Breeze // , , ,
Sup yall,

So, last night, I headed up to Hollywood to Cranes Tavern to catch a show that Kenan Bell put on to honor the birthday of band member Jason B...  I really dig these cats, and they are the personification of a trend that I have been screaming about to anyone that will listen for a minute - the convergence of popular music...  These dudes draw on multiple genres to produce a sound that is not only uniquely appealing, but extremely relevant and authentic...

m_baa9de52a3f34be8ab91360a80f8646f.jpg

The tavern is a bit of a dive and the acoustics for the show weren't great, but I think that made it even more enjoyable.  I really dig watching a gig from a band that is on the verge of breaking (dudes are playing SXSW in March) in this type of setting.  It wasn't about anything except the music and you could see the comradery that these fellas have and the passion for their art that they share...  Perhaps the coolest part of the show was when Kenan jumped up on Jason's shoulders to spit his last verse on the track Good Day...

And here is another of my favorites from the fellas below - the track is called Enjoy.  The fellas just were in the UK for a minute doing a few shows and you can see videos from that trip over at their MySpace...  If you aren't hip to Kenan Bell yet, then maybe hip just isn't your thing...

Track: The Ting Tings featuring Shawn Chrystopher - That's Not My Name

01.06.09 // By Breeze // ,
Sup yall,

So, I first heard of The Ting Tings at SXSW last year, and this duo from Manchester, England has been blowing up ever since.  I dug that they used the song That's Not My Name for the Victoria Secret Fashion show, and think the track is super catchy...  Even cooler is the fact that Inglewood Hero Shawn Chrystopher jumped on to lend a verse to the track, making it even more fly...

I haven't written too much about Shawn Chrys, but rest assured that there is more coming...  Dude ripped a freestyle at the LAx Paperboy$ Show on the 23rd, and really grabbed my attention...  His IWG Mixtape is super dope as well, but more on that later...  As always, download here and preview below...  Props to Meka...

01.05.09 // By Breeze // ,
Sup yall,

Shake said it very well, so here is his description of Mickey Factz' new track called Thinking Out Loud:

Well that didn't take long. This morning Mickey was talking about recording a record letting out his feelings of the moment. And hours later he's already blasting it off. Over Kanye's Say U Will. Wow... talk about passion on the mic. This quickly jumped up to one of my favorite joints by dude. And apparently he lost his phone... so if you we're getting emails from him, be sure to hit him up and give up the contacts!

A Breezy 2008 Holiday Rap-Up

01.05.09 // By Breeze // , ,
Sup yall,

Another holiday season came and went, and I'm sure we are all still a lil bit hung over.  So, as many of us head back to the grind of a 9 to 5, school, or just life in general, I figured I'd post some of the highlights of the last few weeks...  In this information age, information travels so fast that taking any time off at all will put you way behind, so here is a quick recap of the coolest of the '08 holiday season...

First thing I gotta mention is the parties.  My NYE celebration at a buddy's mansion on the Sunset strip was absolutely insane, but a little too explicit to really dig into...  However, there were some other parties that absolutely blew the doors off of '08.  The homey Mizzle's LAx Paperboy$ Just Be Cool Holiday Party was absolutely bananas on the 23rd!  I already posted a few vids from the show, but here are the fellas from U-N-I performing their smash Hollywood Hiatus... These fellas put on an insane live show!

And, on the 27th, the folks at dubFrequency put on their Basement Blockstars Party that absolutely set it off!  My FlipCam froze up about halfway into the show, so I couldn't get footage of how truly live the show got, but here is a video of Dom Kennedy performing the track Tennishoes...  Enjoy...

Better late than never - here is an installment of an MTV series of profiles where they highlight all of the emcee's that they think are Set to Blow in 2009 - of course, they are way late, but it is MTV...  The first artist they chose to profile was B.o.B., and they are highlighting another emcee each day of the week.  Enjoy...

And, here is some video courtesy of Meka of B.o.B. and T.I. in the studio and of B.o.B. live at The Five Spot in Atlanta...

In the lab...

On stage...

And, of course, some new tracks and videos were released on the interweb that I will try to corral and post, so keep checking on your boy...  Grind in '09!!!!

Track: Naledge - Look at Them Hips

01.05.09 // By Breeze // ,
Sup yall,

So, after being totally "unplugged" for a couple of days, I feel great and energized.  NYE was crazy and 2009 is going to be a killer year...  Just peeped this one over at dF - Here is a dope new track from Naledge called Look at Them Hips.  Growing up in the South, I have an affinity for the strip and the tracks that pay that special place the proper homage...  Enjoy...

And I'm in the middle of working on a Holiday Round Up post to cover all of the things that I missed while rehabbing, so check back...

Peace yall,
