Soul From the Swamp: Meet Rob Roy

04.29.09 // By Breeze //
Sup yall,

The first time I ever heard anything from the dude Rob Roy was at the release party for U-N-I's sophomore release, A Love Supreme.  Dude opened up for U-N-I and CurT@!n$, and I gotta be honest, at first I was not feeling dude at all.  I felt like there was something interesting to dude's flow and style in general and I love that he's from "the swamp in Florida" around Jacksonville.  (I was actually born in the capital city of Tallahassee when the 'rents were still at F.S.U.)  But, real talk, I thought dude was suspect through his first number, and totally entranced by the end of his set.

When he broke into the incredibly unique, out-there number that is Fur in My Cap, I swear, I got it right then...  Peep the video below that stars like Pharrell, Kanye, and others have already called brilliant.

Also, here is some video of dude the night I was introduced to Rob Roy's magic after I got it!!!  His energy live is insane, infectious, and super intriguing.  Dude is super soulful and the last song I caught when he opened for Y-O and Thurz was the jam Carmencita which is an incredibly soulful song that features Rob actually singing on the track.  And lemme tell you, his voice is super interesting in person.  Here is Carmencita live - I recorded his live rendition of Fur in My Cap as well but somehow deleted the file like an asshole.  Either way, you can still see how live dude gets - Rob Roy is fucking Rock 'n Roll with a really dope Hip Hop edge!

Below is the stream of dude's recent release called King Warrior Magician Lover, which is an eclectic collection of sounds that draw on all genres as influence.

Also, make sure you peep the track Rollercoaster Baby, which is an incredible blend of electronic and R&B elements on the hook with a ton of empty space in the verses that allows Rob's flow to bounce around the track and be showcased.  The timing of his delivery is so unique and antithetical to the melody of the music that it really makes you pay attention to what dude is spitting.  Peep this video I caught on homey's MySpace - it's entitled Musings on Home(and Pyramid Energy)...

I gotta big up the homey's at dubFrequency who are the first people that I really heard reppin' Rob's shit heavy since I first saw him.  I don't know where these cats find 'em, but they have been finding some diamonds in the rough lately.

Do yourself a favor and familiarize yourself with this dude's shit, cuz like it or not, you'll be hearing more from him!  This is the type of originality that EVERYONE is looking for... And, if they aren't, they should be!

Peace,
-Breeze
