MyCypher Video: Skeme & Chris Focus Working on Skeme of Things 2

05.30.09 // By Breeze // ,

A lil' while back, I was lucky enough to catch a studio session with Skeme and Chris Focus as the two worked on the Maybach Music 2 remix.  The song will be featured on Skeme's upcoming mixtape called Skeme of Things 2, which is set to drop on June 2nd.  Most of the original production was handled by Roosevelt and the record will feature a few "industry beats" according to Skeme himself.

Video: STIX - I'm Fly

05.28.09 // By Breeze //

An email ended up in my inbox with a link to this video, and while I don't normally, I took the time to click and and see what was on the other end.  Well, the video I found was for a song called I'm Fly from an artist named STIX.  Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised that the video was pretty well done and the song rather catchy despite the obligatory auto-tune.  I don't know much about STIX except that he is from Watts and has a debut record dropping on July 7th called Later for Soundcheck, which I think is a very cool, unique, and applicable name.  Ima do some diggin' on dude and report back...

MyCypher Video: Charles Hamilton Interview Teaser

05.26.09 // By Breeze //
On the heels of the craziness that was last week, I decided that the time was right to push out this trailer for the MyCypher exclusive interview with Charles Hamilton.  I refrained from posting the Sonic vs. Knuckles video last week, but am pretty sure that everyone and their mama has seen it by now.  While I don't know the whole story and haven't spoken to Charles about it, I feel like it really painted an inaccurate picture of Charles (and Bri for that matter).

I hope that this video will show a more human side of Charles, and will allow people to see that dude is just a person like the rest of us.  Yes, he has faults...  We ALL do!  But, dude is also a really chill dude who is very intelligent and passionate about his music.  He really does live this shit and I hope that fact comes thru in the video.

Make sure you watch the vid all the way through as there is a sneak peak of some of the incredible footage I got at the home of Abiodun Oyewole, a founding member of The Last Poets.  And, in case you don't know, The Last Poets are widely credited with being the FIRST HIP HOP GROUP EVER!!!!

Special thanks to Charles and Bri for providing this window!

MyCypher Video: Rob Roy Live at the dubFrequency Industry Showcase

05.25.09 // By Breeze // ,
On May 13th, dubFrequency hosted a handful of industry folk at On the Rox at The Roxy and treated them to a special show from Rob Roy.  Dude ran through about six songs, and was his usual, charismatic self.  First, here is Carmencita, which may be my favorite record from King Warrior Magician Lover, and is always the song Rob closes a set with...

And, here is some footage of dude running through the track Rollercoaster Baby, which is incredibly infectious and a song that I think wouldn't have much trouble crossing over...

I was talking to the homey Jesse about Rob's lyrics, and he brought up the point that, while most people don't take the time to listen to the words, dude actually spits about some real deep shit...  The fact that his delivery is so unique and unpredictable, and lyrics are so cryptic really forces the listener to pay attention to "get it."  But, I assure you that dude definitely has some shit to say!

In an unfortunate chain of events, rapper Dolla, signed to Konvict Music, was fatally shot yesterday outside of the Beverly Center in Los Angeles.  Skeme released the fourth leak off of Skeme of Things 2 today with the attached note:

I listen to this song in tears missing my big brother and mentor in rhyme. I wanted to be like the man that died yesterday. This is hard to even type but I know that he watches over me with pride now just like he did when he was here. With that being said here's Commercial Break Four this was a commemoration for Chad "Pimp C" Butler but now my memories are also shared with Roderick Anthony "Dolla" Burton II you're gone but never forgotten. Track: U-N-I - Land of the Kings

05.19.09 // By Breeze // ,
l_fb9654493593efebefd896924f9349ca.jpg

So, Mountain Dew's Green Label Sound has employed the services of LA's Independent Hip Hop superstars, U-N-I, to help them forward their image and connect with their consumers.  The song that Y-O and Thurz recorded for GLS is called Land of the Kings, and is really, really a great song.  I love the melodic elements of the track, especially the live instrumentation and chorus, and the fellas definitely do their respective things.  The reason that this duo works so well centers around how well the two emcee's play off of each other - they know each other so well and each brings some very different, yet very unique, things to the table.  Download the track at GreenLabelSound.com or stream it below...

Also, check out this studio session recap and interview that the good folks over at GLS conducted with U-N-I...

Video: Nola Darling - That Nola D (Boom, Boom Pow Remix)

When my boy first name-dropped "Nola Darling," I thought he was talking about some new R&B singer. You know ... like Keri Hilson

Well, turns out Nola Darling is not one but two lovely ladies whose music blends hip-hop, reggae and dancehall into a very nice musical gumbo. Not to mention, they are quite easy on the eyes.

Last night Nola D premiered their take of the ubiquitous Black Eyed Peas summer jam, "Boom, Boom Pow."

As as bonus, here's a sidewalk interview - in two parts, no less - that the homie Yohance (aka M.E.R.C.U.R.Y) did last night with the girlies. Can't say I'm mad at him - in fact, I'm kinda kickin' myself for being at another spot while this was going down. Guess I'll have to see 'em at UCLA JazzReggae Festival coming up.

MyCypher Video: Kidz in the Hall & U-N-I Turn it Out at The Viper Room

05.11.09 // By Breeze // ,
image002.gif

On Sunday Mother's Day, May 10th, Kidz in the Hall performed live at the Viper Room along with U-N-I, H.O.P.E., and CurT@!n$.  This was the first time that I had seen the Kidz live, and I was completely entertained by their live set!  Naledge is a phenomenal emcee and Double-O is a perfect compliment as a hype man.  The dopest thing about the night was seeing Double-O do his thing on his digital drum set, which seems to becoming a bit of a trademark for the dude...  I love this track called Lucifer's Joyride, which they performed a snippet of at the show.

Also, the fellas ran through a dope, soulful new track off of Naledge's upcoming project, Chicago Picasso.  The song is called Star Struck and it should come as no surprise that it was produced by Sa-Ra...

Finally, the Kidz performed the smash hit Love Hangover, which features Estelle, and is super dope!

The last video that I'll include features U-N-I performing the track Windows from A Love Supreme.  I really dig the laid back vibe of this track and don't think I have posted a video of the duo performing it live...

All in all, the show was super dope, and all of the sets were pretty fire...  I didn't get video of everyone because the Viper Room is funny about allowing cameras, and as such, I had to be pretty incognito about it...

MyCypher Video: Brittany Bosco & Mike Baker Live

05.07.09 // By Breeze // ,
Sup yall,

On Sunday, April 26, I headed to the Dakota Lounge in Santa Monica for a show that my man Carl at Fresh MLK hipped me to.  The headliner was ATL songstress Brittany Bosco with Bay-area emcee Mike Baker serving as the opener...  While I wasn't sure what to expect as I was relatively unhip to both artists, I can honestly say that both got my attention and peaked my curiosity...

Brittany's set was killer and often channeled Badu and Lauryn Hill and at one point she bum-rushed the engineer's both after repeated failed attempts to play the right track...  Her charisma is pretty evident - here she performs an older joint called 8-Trak that I was feelin'...

Towards the end of her set, she jumped off stage and performed a few songs from the crowd, which was super dope except for the fact that the Flip Cam doesn't have a light on it...  Anyhow, you can sort of make out Brit performing from the floor and eventually ending up back on stage.  The song is very cool track called Glitch off of her recent Spectrum EP.

The opening act also caught my ear with his blend of electro pop and break beats combined with a pretty interesting flow...  I met dude the following night at the FutureStreet/DrugSounds release party where he gave me his latest project, Now or Never.  Peep the dude running through the tracks The Chase & Too Much and stay tuned for more from Mike Baker on MyCypher.com as I continue to get hip...

All in all, the show was dope - thanks to Carl and Kenya for hooking it up...

MyCypher Video: U-N-I, Adam Tensta, Mickey Factz, Rob Roy, Shawn Chrystopher, & More Rock the Roxy

05.01.09 // By Breeze // ,
Sup yall,

On Thursday night, April 30th, I hit the Roxy on Sunset for an insane lineup that continued to grow throughout the course of the day.  Initially, the bill was to include U-N-I, Adam Tensta, Mickey Factz, The 87 Stick Up Kids, and Shawn Chrystopher.  However, as if this lineup wasn't fly enough, by midday Thursday I saw via Twitter that Diz Gibran, Bleu Collar, and Rob Roy had been added, so I was hyped, needless to say...  The show was so dope that my FlipCam filled up and I had to manage the footage in real time to make sure I got a song from everyone.  I'll post more footage later, but first here are some of the highlights...

Probably the coolest thing of the night, despite the venue dropping the curtains two separate times, was seeing U-N-I with a live band for the first time.  I had to miss their performance at USC last week, but I heard that Y-O & Thurz were unreal with a full band!  Peep this super musical rendition of Beautiful Day off of their debut Fried Chicken & Watermelon...

Another high point for me was catching the homey Mickey Factz, who is in from NYC...  I'd never seen Mickey live and I was telling Thurz how impressed I was by his energy and stage presence.  Dude ran through one of my favorites from him called Automatic, which got the stereotypically apathetic LA crowd into the show a bit....

Also in from out of town fucking Sweden, Adam Tensta & Eboi took the stage to represent the notorious Tensta Projects in Stockholm.  I love this dude's vibe and style and think his spit is pretty ridiculous, as evidenced by his double-time flow over sped up versions of his tracks.  Peep this rendition of They Wanna Know to see what I'm saying...

Rob Roy came straight to the venue from his day job, and was still wearing his uniform.  This cat is super gracious and humble while insanely confident and sure of himself at the same time, and was hilarious when asking the crowd, "You like groceries?  I just came from work right down the hill..."  Homey performed his smash Fur in My Cap and left the crowd a little stunned - this kid is so charismatic and soulful that I think sometimes he overwhelms audiences a bit... which is absolutely a good thing in my book.  I heard people in the crowd exclaiming, "That dude fucking killed it! He's fucking dope..." after Rob finished his set.  I'm telling yall, pay attention to this kid!

And, to open the show, the homey Shawn Chrystopher performed his track entitled My House.  I noticed a few production changes in the song and Shawn's deliver was much more deliberate than I've seen on this number live before.  I dig both of the changes - this sort of growth is what really impresses me about dude...  He's always working to improve!

If this night was any indication of where Hip Hop is heading (and I think it was), then we're in for a fun ride!  I have more footage from the other acts that performed, and will get that up as soon as possible.  Also, stay tuned for footage from some other dope events that went down recently in the City of Angels.  Your boy's gotcha covered...

Sup yall,

Skeme w LOGO.jpg

The homey Skeme pushed out the first of four leaks from his upcoming project Skeme of Things 2 which is poised to drop on June 2nd.  The track is called Commercial Break 1 and below is the reasoning behind the name directly from the mouth of the Sox City representative...

I aired out a track entitled "Commercial Break" the meaning behind the name was that I was breaking away from the music considered "Commercial" I hope that you enjoy the song since it was made for you...

Download the track here or stream below... Give a good listen because this is some of the best shit I have heard from the Duke - His hood stories are entertaining as hell and he is really tightening his delivery...  I mean, the kid is like 19...  Be on the lookout for more from dude soon...
