Video: A 2Dope (Final) Weekend in LA

06.30.09 // By Breeze // ,

So, the homey Meka is making the move from the left coast to the Big Apple this week to go handle some business...  To commemorate his last weekend in the City of Angels, MekDot put together this lil video recap of his weekend, including some footage from the MyCypher Release Party for Nobody Famous' newest Order Up! project, where he was gracious enough to grant us a guest DJ set...

Thanks for all the support Mek, and here's betting that shit starts REALLY crackin' once you settle in back East!

Video: Drake Signs

06.30.09 // By Breeze //

I know I'm late on this and the news officially broke yesterday, but Drake just announced that he has officially signed with Lil Wayne's Young Money imprint.  The deal will have Young Money and Cash Money splitting the responsibility for Drake's record on the label side and Universal Republic (the mother company) handling all distribution...

There has been a lot of chatter on the web about this decision, but I think that it's a smart move for everyone involved.  Dude was gonna sign with one of Universal's custom labels pretty much from the jump, and this just lets Wayne take some time to regroup without losing much buzz because he can just ride the draft of Drake's...

RobRoy-thumb-350x525-629.jpg

I just caught this one on Rob Roy's Twitter earlier today.  The track is called The $hit, and it is dope as hell!  I love Rob's stuff because, while some elements might remind listeners of something else, the finished product is like nothing you've ever heard before...  Download the track here or stream below...

MyCypher Video: Dom Kennedy - Showtime (Making the Video)

06.26.09 // By Breeze //

Dom Kennedy, J Skillz, and the rest of the LAx Paperboy$ family were kind enough to invite me out to get some BTS footage of the video shoot for Dom's smash Showtime, from his recent FutureStreet/DrugSounds record...

I love this record, and think that the concept behind this video is absolutely lights out - Use the hype and hysteria surrounding Game 1 of the NBA Finals as a backdrop for a video with a hook referencing perhaps the greatest era in Laker basketball history - The SHOWTIME Era...  The video was shot, directed, and is being edited by the multi-talented J-Skillz himself and will undoubtedly be an insane tribute to LA culture...  And, you can catch a snippet of Dom's interview with KCAL news a bit into the vid as well - You know I got interviews...

Many thanks to Dom, J, Gav, and the rest of the LAx family for allowing me to tag along.  I can't wait to see the finished product!

And, in case you didn't know, there is a dope show going down tomorrow in LA!!!  RSVP for FREE entry at www.going.com/mycypher...

Video: U-N-I Learns of MJ's Death Onstage in London

06.26.09 // By Breeze //

So, while onstage at a venue in the UK, U-N-I gets word that The King of Pop has indeed passed, and you can see the disbelief and shock that overcomes the whole room...

I remember sitting in my dad's office when I was like 5 or 6 and just watching the Michael Jackson video marathons that they used to play on VH1 all damn day.  At my uncle's second wedding, somewhere in the god-forsaken midwestern state of Kansas, I refused to attend the ceremony if I wasn't allowed to dress like MJ in the Billie Jean video...  I rolled into the wedding rocking penny loafers with white sox and my button-down unbuttoned with a wife beater under it (I didn't have a sequined jacket)...  Peep Y-O's own tribute (which he refers to in the video) below - dude breaks into this after almost every rendition of Cali Soul, but now it seems to have much more relevance suddenly, huh?

My point is, an icon as big as Michael Jackson was had an influence on almost ALL of us.  People deal with grief in different ways, so I refuse to hate, but please do give this man's life the respect it deserves...  RIP Mike...

Track: Shawn Chrystopher - Untitled

06.25.09 // By Breeze //
Untitled Blog Web.jpg

Shawn Chrystopher pushed me the first single off of his debut album, A City With No Seasons, recently along with the dope artwork above.  Head over to honourrolestudent.com/untitled to download the song Untitled and get to know Shawn a bit.  Here are a few words from SC:

The reason why the song is untitled is because it's a love story, and I felt if I gave the song any kind of "love" title it would already be looked at as 'cheesy' and  'predictable' before anyone got a chance to listen to it.  So this way, people get to judge the song solely based on its production and lyrics (as they should anyway). Sort of like reading a book with no cover or synopsis on the back, just you and the art.

A City With No Seasons will drop on August 11th...

Video: Pacific Division - The Mayor

06.24.09 // By Breeze //

This song has been steady buzzin' all over LA for some time now, and the fellas from Pacific Division finally dropped the music video for The Mayor today.  Now, there was some shady business around the release, spear-headed by a site who's business practices I completely despise, so I waited until the homey Meka posted it as I know he had the okay...  Enjoy.

Video: Diz Gibran & H.O.P.E. Live at Mountain Bar

06.23.09 // By Breeze //
I missed this show a while back, but the homey BMUSE just posted a gang of footage from the event that featured Diz Gibran and H.O.P.E.  Dope - Now I don't feel too much like I missed it!  He's actually doing a very cool series over on his blog lately and this is one of the final installments, so go check him out...  Here's a bit of background from the dude himself:

With at least 10 performers hitting the stage and more than 20 videos from this night alone, I knew there would be no way I could give these guys their proper shine in just one post. I have decided to break it down a bit and give you the best from everybody that performed.

My last night in LA before a very early 6 am Monday flight took me to Mountain Bar in Chinatown, where many of my friends and some of the best up and comers in Hip hop today would be performing in a funky old spot in front of a young crowed of LA hip hopers. In this first segment, H.O.P.E and Diz Gibran get things started off right getting to work right away on the small stage.

Diz Gibran- Dark End of the Street

Run Around

Capital D

Just Me

H.O.P.E. - H-O-P-E

The Girlfriend Song

I was pretty pleased with the quality of these videos. Considering I use such a small camera, the sound is always pretty clear. Coming up in the next couple segments, expect to see some dope stuff from Dom Kennedy, cAREter, Tiron, Tunji, El Prez, Basicali and U-N-I.

MyCypher Video: Santigold Live at the Hollywood Bowl

06.22.09 // By Breeze // ,

The homey Mattmatics was gifted some tickets to the Santigold show at The Hollywood Bowl from a very cool friend of his, and decided to bring your boy along to catch the action.  The show was fire and also featured Raphael Saadiq and Femi Kuti, so you know we had a blast!  I was able to get somewhat close and record a few songs, but the distance means the visuals will suffer a bit - except that one of my favorite parts of this venue is the changing colors of the actual bowl...  Above, Santi runs thru the song that is mainly responsible for breaking her, L.E.S. Artistes, which I got most of before being told to stop filming...  And, below is a dope video of the Diplo collab from Santi called Get It Up into Unstoppable...

And, finally, peep this video of the Philly girl performing You'll Find a Way...  Thanks again to Matt and Erin for a bomb time!

B.o.B. released his latest project today called B.o.B. vs. Bobby Ray, and it already has the net in a stir.  I got it pretty early this am and the link I saw already had over a thousand d/l's - I can't lie, I'm excited for this one too.  Despite the confusion around the name, I'm glad that B.o.B. decided to embrace the traits that make Bobby Ray different!  Download the tape here and be sure to check out dude's new site at bobatl.com...

MyCypher Video: Wale, cARTer, & Dude Royal Buzzin' at dF's Beestings & Nosebleeds

06.21.09 // By Breeze // ,

So, despite sub-par, overcast skies, quite a few heads still made it downtown to The Standard on Saturday for dubFrequency's dope pool party event, Beestings & Nosebleeds.  The main draw on this dreary day was DC product, and Interscope signee, Wale, and let me assure you that dude did not disappoint.  The weather was cooperative enough to let the sun peek through for a bit of the show, and Wale performed three numbers to a really packed house.  Peep dude running through the smash Chillin, featuring Lady Gaga, above and also Nike Boots below...

cARTer performed a few new tracks from Legal Trapping and the video below, which features the song Million Dollar Fit...

To open the show, dF's own Dude Royal had the crowd rollin' with the track Dancing in My Car.  This kid is hilarious and speaks on what he knows, which is super refreshing in today's game - He's believable, authentic, and funny as shit...

Even despite the random June-gloom, the event still cracked!  Shouts to J, Flakez, Ian, and the rest of the dF crew for a dope event!  The weather is going to cooperate one of these days, and this event is going to absolutely go-off!

And, speaking of summertime events, MyCypher is co-hosting an album release party for the homey Nobody Famous' new record, Order Up! Vol. 3: Chicken & Waffles, next weekend at a dope mansion in Baldwin Hills.  The party is FREE with RSVP, will include gift bags for the first 50 people to arrive courtesy of Mocha Soul Clothing, and will feature a ton of performances.  Hit the link here and come thru to help Famous celebrate this release!

06.18.09 // By Breeze //
Thumbnail image for UNI.jpg

I saw that this was floating around earlier today via Thurzday's twitter, but the homey JJ hit me with the link before I had a chance to go looking.  Below is his description of the U-N-I and Asher Roth remix to Lark on My Go-Kart:

It's been a long time but I'm back with another U-N-I treat. The guys hopped on Asher Roth's "Lark On My Go-Kart" before heading out to Europe, and you know if it's U-N-I it's gonna be nothin but stupid dumb fresh dopeness. Track: KiD CuDi - Excuse My Mood

06.16.09 // By Breeze //

As the title might suggest, Excuse My Mood is grittier than a lot of the stuff that KiD CuDi has released, especially of late...  I love the sign-off - "Peace and Love, by the way..."  Day 'N Nite was getting like 50 spins an hour back down in the dirty.  And the radio DJ's were pumpin' that stuff, "This new KiD CuDi!!!"  Crazy...

I really dig this track from the homey Wax from his recent collaborative project with producer EOM called Liquid Courage.  The track is called Music & Liquor and is super dope - Wax is great lyrically and tells really vivid stories about shit that is actually relatable.  I like the way this video was shot and think that it lines up perfectly with the content and vibe of the song.  And, who is that girl in the video?  Pick up Liquid Courage on iTunes now...

Video: El Prez - Floss Angeles Video Trailer

06.14.09 // By Breeze //

I know I've been slackin' lately a bit, but I promise I'll be back in full swing shortly.  In the meantime, I wanted to get this up - El Prez and the FCC shot a dope video for the track Floss Angeles off of Prez's upcoming project, entitled Animal Style, which is set to drop on July 1st.  The above trailer gives a clear idea of just how dope this video will be and features a ton of the FCC fam...  Props to the homey Eazee for pushing this my way!  Below is his description...

So we shot this awhile back with the DRG fam...and it's about done.  T-Shirts by Ek5obition coming soon, Behind the Scenes dropping soon, Video dropping sooner, and a new El Prez project on the way...oh and if you're lucky you can get invited to the viewing party.  Let's go...oh and there are some Lakers bumping this shit right now getting amped for this parade.

Video: Dope Chris Young Freestyle

06.09.09 // By Breeze //

So, if you aren't up on my man Chris Young yet, you need to do some serious soul searching (get it?) because dude's musical/lyrical ability is relatively unmatched (imo) and only growing.  Dude has some pretty big things on the horizon that I can't really speak on yet, but let's just say that you'll be hearing dude buzzin' on your radio iPod sooner than you think...  I've met some emcees who can spit off the top and never miss a beat, but very few actually formulate a message or tell a coherent story while doing so - well, Chris does so the rest of yall better get your bars up or just stay home...

And, here's a video of the fellas putting it down at The Paid Dues Festival a while back...  I really dig this track, which is called Touch The Moon.

MyCypher Video: Skeme Live at the Skeme of Things 2 Release Party

06.05.09 // By Breeze // ,
_MG_5850WEB.jpg

On Tuesday night, I met a good friend for a drink in Santa Monica and we both ended up losing track of time - I looked up and it was 11:30 all of a sudden, so I hopped in the ride and zoomed over to Chinatown and the Broccoli Kung Pao event to celebrate the release of Skeme's newest mixtape, Skeme of Things 2.

_MG_5895WEB.jpg

Somehow I managed to get there right before the man of the hour took the stage, and I was not disappointed.  Skeme ran through his cuts with a ton of energy, and the crowd was going bananas - Listen as they sing along to the chorus on That's My Bitch...  And, peep the pic above that I snagged from the homegirl Briana's spot - this chick was dancing around for a minute with one nipple just blowin' in the breeze (no pun intended)...

Towards the end of the show, Skeme also ran through the banger Music To Fly To, which is one of the my favorites from homey...

Overall, the night was pretty wild, and definitely a success, even despite my late arrival.  Many thanks to Paul, Skeme, and everyone else who came out!

Video: H.O.P.E. Live in San Francisco

All of LA (except for me) recently shot up to San Francisco for a takeover weekend that included a dope show at the Mighty...  H.O.P.E. performed The Girlfriend Song at said show and it looks as if the crowd was pretty into it.  I dig the concept for this song and think this kid is very creative, as evidenced by the cool flip into Crush On You...  Props to Meka...

Video: Chester French Interview with iHipHop

06.04.09 // By Breeze //

The good folks over at iHipHop caught up with DA and Max of Chester French for a hilarious interview.  These dudes seem super cool and very similar to a lot of the cats that I went to school with (Tufts University is literally right down the street from Harvard)...  Here's an excerpt from the fellas about the piece courtesy of Meka.

So what did we talk about? Just the usual. Why Kanye's jawline is all fucked up. Parties with girls, chocolate sauce, & mint schnapps. How Bun B lacked credibility before Jaques Jams, and why hookers should expect to get murdered. I even think the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" rule from the military was brought into question. And I thought rappers were weird. SMH.

Track: Charles Hamilton - Reminder

06.04.09 // By Breeze //
CharlesHamilton.jpg

Charles Hamilton leaked this track called Reminder , which was supposed to be included on This Perfect Life, yesterday.  The song was apparently pulled from the record for being too dark...  Below is an excerpt from Charles' blog:

I took Reminder off the album because it's too dark. It has been replaced by Disabmbiguation. Just look up what it means. Now that the final tracklisting is all music that reflects a life gone from dark to light, I can finally say that this perfect life is livable.

Reminder was in the same vein as Shinin', in the sense of me going through serious withdrawal when I wrote it. Honestly people. Do YOU wanna hear a song from a junkie in recession? Especially on an album where progression is the key to perfection?

Download Reminder here or stream below.

And, here's the tracklist, as it stands, for This Perfect Life including some of Charles' descriptions.

Video:BCTV/EazeeSt Present 2x2 with Skeme & the New Boyz

06.03.09 // By Breeze // ,

I could write a few words about this video and Skeme's show last night (which was f*cking live - video on the way) to celebrate the release of Skeme of Things 2, but why would I when Eazee's description is so eloquent?...

Ladies and gentlemen I present something new: Eazee Street x Broccoli City present "2x2".  The basis is two blogs, 2 artists, one good interview.  We have a few of these in the works and we're looking to make this a dope series highlighting all sorts of the talent our city has to offer.  I showed ya'll the New Boyz video last week and told you I had something brewing with them.  Well our boy Skeme is familiar with Jerkin,' so when given the opportunity to interview the New Boyz and trying to figure out who to use for the first installment of "2x2"; I was like this is perfect.  So peep it out and stay tuned for more...

Shouts to Eazee and Brandon for what looks to be a dope series - hopefully we'll get more of these soon!

Video: Drake Interview on Semtex TV

06.02.09 // By Breeze // ,

UPDATE:  Semtex posted Part 2 of his interview with Drizzy...

DJ Semtex recently caught up with Drake in London's Hyde Park for a dope interview.  Above is part one and below is Semtex's description.  Props to Meka...

Drake was supposed to pass through my show last Friday, but he canceled at the last minute due to a studio session that was running late........with Rihanna.
I hooked up with him the following day, instead of doing the usual studio interview, we hit Hyde Park, which is London's equivalent of Central Park.
Drake breaks down:
*The Rihanna situation.
*Working with Kanye West
*Working with Chase & Status
*The forth-coming album and releasing it independently.
.....and more.

Skeme of Things 2 Artwork FOR ULTRADOT.jpg

The day has finally arrived for Skeme to drop his newest project, Skeme of Things 2, and he did not disappoint.  Instead of my ramblings, here are some words from the Duke himself about the tape:

First off I want to thank God for making all things possible for me and my team. I want to thank my mother Mrs. Georgia Kimble for putting up with me and helping me chase down my dreams, also everybody involved in the making of this project my brothers Cire, Nye, Lite, Youssef, Beau, HOPE, and Julien. Much love goes out to Meka for the love shown for my music and the project as a whole. Thanks to my man Diz for showing love to the tape. I also want to thank my brothers EJ and Kevin for riding with me on this long road. I also want to thank Kiana, Ashley, and Aricka for all the patience and support of me as an artist and I love you for that. Much love to my big brother Terry Kennedy and the whole Fly Society squad, also to my Grindtime family for holding me down Tommy I see you bro. Thank you to anybody downloading or buying this mixtape because I know that without you none of this would be possible. This album is in loving memory of those lost in the struggle R.I.P. to K. Bone, Roach, Infan Smoke, Diron Rivers, and Roderick Anthony "Dolla" Burton II. Your are gone but never forgotten.... And before I go... INGLEWOOD UP!

Download it HERE and show love!

MyCypher Video: Rob Roy Live at dubFrequency's Beestings & Nosebleeds

06.01.09 // By Breeze //

Despite the overcast weather (which was a huge let down), I shot downtown on Saturday and hit the rooftop at The Standard Hotel for dubFrequency's Beestings & Nosebleeds jumpoff.  The event featured a dope performance by Dude Royal that caught me totally off guard, so I didn't get any footy - But, let me assure you, dude is dope live and f*cking hilarious!  In addition, Rob Roy came through to perform a couple numbers including the insane reworking of Turn My Swag On above.

This was also the first time that I have seen Gold & Gucci live, and the track definitely works.  I must say that I am digging dude's music heavy, so he could probably read the phone book and be captivating...  but isn't that what makes a great performer/entertainer?

And, finally, below is some footage of Fur in My Cap live, including a dope flip of the second verse...

Thanks to Jesse, Flakez, Ian, and everyone at dF for throwing a dope event.  Now, if we could only get the weather to oblige, the next one will surely be off the hook!

Peace,
-Breeze
